Hundreds of thousands of dogs are dying each year, and Gemma’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of this harsh reality. Gemma, a sweet and innocent puppy, was torn from her life and confiscated by animal control along with 12 other dogs. The trauma she experienced was compounded by the cruel use of a catchpole, a device meant to restrain and control. The photo of this incident is a painful reminder of the lack of compassion and empathy in our system. My story of Gemma is different. This gentle puppy eagerly approached me, tail wagging, and showered me with affection. She didn’t growl, bark, or show any undesirable behaviors. It’s clear that Gemma is not a threat, but a victim of circumstance and misinformation. Due to her fearful behavior during impound, Gemma has been listed as “rescue only,” a designation that severely limits her chances of finding a forever home. It’s a devastating example of how our system fails to account for the emotional trauma and stress that dogs experience during impoundment. Now, Gemma is scheduled to be killed because no one is willing to reassess her and get to know her true nature. It’s a devastating reminder that our system is broken, and dogs like Gemma are paying the ultimate price. Dogs need empathy, understanding, and compassion. They need us to be their voice, to stand up for them, and to fight for their lives. Gemma’s story is a cry for help, a reminder that we must do better.
