@_amberinamerica: Mr Ted was part of the family from the moment we brought him home! We will do everything we can to help him get over this fear/anxiety of people and live out his best life - we know he’s got it in him! Will let you know what the trainer says! #rescuedog #anxiousdog #rescuedogsoftiktok #adoptdontshop
As a dog trainer I can tell you that it will take time, the trainer will be the first person that he can trust outside of the family. Whatever he tells you to do- practice is so important. Doing it in real life is important- the trainer can train YOU to do anything, you guys are the ones who will have to put in the work. I have faith in you! You’re doing all the right things. Most people would shy away at this point.

I think most neighborhoods don’t have public garbage cans. It’s just a thing here.

I had one like this and we put bacon in guest’s pockets. The smell added curiosity. Then we had friends offer cheese, peanut butter or bacon when visiting. It really helped. I didn’t worry about people out and about. 🍀🍀

If you can afford it, hire a Certified Veterinary Behavior Specialist. They will work with you and your family one-on-one to develop and implement a plan specifically for Teddy. The certification is key though, don’t hire just any “behavior specialist”

My re-home doesn't like people that he doesn't know coming to the house. He doesn't like strangers stroking him either.

I have the exact same problem with my rescue who’s also a doodle. He trust me and me only. He’s scared of every person who comes in my house and I really can’t take him out bc his anxiety is too bad then when we get home he’s scared of me for a day or so. Breaks my heart to know what our rescues have been through. 😢

“Place” is the BIGGEST command to help my dog cope with strangers. On a raised cot or crate. And with practice it DOES get better! Also having the leash on in the house in case helps.

It takes time. If you can take him to pet friendly stores- Home Depot, Lowes, pet stores that would help. And for the guests you know they’re coming over, you can put some treats in a little bag or jar that they can grab before they come in so that when he is calm, they can give them to him. You only want to reward the good behavior and ignore the bad. Getting the assistance from a behavioralist trainer will help too.
