We do 60/20/10/10. Everything goes into one account, 60% stays in the checking account for life expenses, 20% goes to savings and then we each get 10% for “discretionary” spending aka whatever we want to do. Works well for us!

We fully combined!! I was sooo for keeping separate personal accounts before but honestly with trying to create a household budget and tracking expenses/figuring out what we can put in savings it made it way easier to have visibility over everything

Everything is all together. We are both very involved in tracking the money and making money decisions. We started with percentages but once we had kids and both a house it just made more sense to completely combine.

My fiancé and I are going to follow Ramit Sethi’s method for combining. He has a book and podcast called money for couples I’ve learned a ton from! If you’re interested in personal (& joint) finance. Basically all income will flow into our joint account. All joint expenses will be paid on a joint cc paid from that account. Then we will have a set amount of guilt free spending that will automaticall transfer to our personal accounts each month. We’ll keep personal cc’s that will be paid from our personal accounts.

This is exactly what me and my husband are thinking of doing. Not sure if it’ll be 60/40, 70/30 etc but either way we’ll keep a bit to ourselves for our individual interests and expenses!

Always keep a separate account in only your name (like you’re doing). Any inheritance stays separate in the beneficiary’s name only!! Do not combine inheritance. This is best practice at my firm (I work in wealth management).

We have a joint account we both put in for savings and paying joint expenses like the mortgage, and then we have a joint credit card that we use for agreed upon expenses that pay off together at the end of the month!

husband and I are both physicians, we have one joint account that he manages primarily. It works well for us

Never go 100%. Maintain a degree of independence, you NEVER know what tomorrow could bring. Stay financially safe. ❤️The 100% thing is just a financial trap for us women. Congrats on your wedding tho!❤️

I couldn’t imagine only having joint accounts. I like having several personal accounts! lol. but I do think one joint savings is good.

I’m so interested in this! I’m getting married in 2 years and have zero interest in combining finances so I’m always interested to see why people do it! Thank you for sharing.

I got married 13 years ago at 30. My husband was adamant about keeping our own bank accounts and creating a joint bank and credit card to pay for our shared expenses and eventually our two kids expenses. I thought it was ridiculous at first, but now in my 40s it’s absolutely the best way in my opinion. All investments/ home purchase are joint but just having my own account (we both work full time) has saved my sanity many times over. Congrats on being a newlywed!✨

Separate checking accounts that get $500/month from our paychecks for personal spending. Joint checking for bills & HYSA. Joint brokerage account for investing. Each have our own Roth IRA & investment account

1 joint checking account for bills only, we keep our separate “home base” accounts for income and such. Track all expenses on credit cards, assign “who it’s for” and have pivot table total it up each pay period so we can distinguish shared (grocery, dining out, pets, etc) vs personal expenses (my shopping sprees lol). No guilt this way and we maximize credit card points while still ensuring the other only pay for what’s shared

How are people handling if you and your partner make different incomes (one more than the other). Still % of income?

We started like this! We got married last year and had a joint checking a year prior for similar reasons. Tried doing what you’re describing for 6 months post wedding or so then it got too annoying with too many accounts so we combined everything except all the credit cards we have one joint (travel) and then each have another 1-2 personal. It works for us and I feel totally comfortable! Agree to try how you’re describing and it’s good to see how it works more separated at first or if it works it works

Is it his 20% and your 20%? Do you have similar income?

We’re doing pretty much the same set up! Love hearing what other couples do, it’s so interesting!

We fully combined. I make 3x what she does but we live the same lifestyle, which means I’d be able to retire a lot sooner than she does if we kept separate finances

Love this idea! I’m getting married next February and we’ve discussed joint bank accounts but I’m not sure what a good split would be - this makes sense to me as well :)

We combined everything 100% and just talk about big purchases to be on the same page about financial goals and then as long as our credit cards our under a certain amount for budget it’s all good. My husband has debt but we pay it off a little bit every month. If I ever don’t work for a period of time then it’s all combined. I couldn’t be happier with how we did it. And I was super nervous at first
