As soon as my boys started going out and paying a tab, we made sure they knew how to tip. They don’t know cause we always took care of it. Good for you no matter the reason he didn’t know.

I doubt he didn’t know at all, I can’t imagine people going to restaurants these days don’t know that tipping .50 or $1.50 on a meal would be insane, so leaving that on a $60 bar tab should be no different. But I love to approach people with the benefit of the doubt because it builds rapport. But I hope he died inside a little bit of embarrassment bc to me I just don’t think you can order your own food/drinks and not know that tipping that little is dehumanizing to the person serving you.
