Replying to @djoj Childism asks us to look at something we’ve normalized for a very long time: the power adults have over children, and the ways we can treat children as less deserving of respect, autonomy, privacy, or consideration simply because they’re children. We can expect respect from them while speaking to them in ways we’d never speak to another adult. We can interpret inexperience as incompetence, questioning as disrespect, or their growing autonomy as something that needs to be knocked down a peg. And then there’s the other piece of this particular situation that I keep wondering about. What happens inside a parent when their 17-year-old says, “I’m leaving,” especially when the parent really doesn’t want them to? Fear. Grief. Anxiety. Loss of control. Feeling rejected or no longer needed. We have no idea what this mom was actually feeling. But those are very human possibilities worth examining, because sometimes our own unprocessed feelings can sneak into what we call a “parenting lesson.” “Fine.
