A Kenyan court has sentenced cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the murders of 191 people. 190 of them were children. Justice Diana Kavedza split the sentence in two: 100 years for the 183 victims who died of starvation, and 100 more years for eight children killed by direct homicide. She called the killings cold and calculated. Prosecutors said Mackenzie convinced his followers to starve themselves and their children so they could reach heaven before the end of the world. In 2023, investigators searching Shakahola Forest recovered 448 bodies, according to Kenya's National Commission on Human Rights. This trial covered 191 of those deaths. Prosecutors asked for the death penalty. The judge refused it. Kenya has not carried out an execution since 1987. Justice took three years to arrive, and for the families still waiting to identify their dead, it is not over. Mackenzie still faces charges over 52 more deaths at a second site, and his lawyer says an appeal has already been filed.
