But through Complete Streets strategies, the City of Salinas reimagined the public right-of-way to work for people — not just cars. They added: • Curb extensions 🧱 to shorten crossing distances, increase pedestrian visibility, and make intersections safer • Chicanes 🚧 to introduce horizontal deflection, breaking up vehicle speed and restoring a sense of place • Raised intersections ♿ to prioritize pedestrian movement and accessibility while reinforcing lower travel speeds • Tile swales 🌧️ for stormwater capture and visual appeal, improving both drainage and the pedestrian environment These tools are more than traffic-calming features — they are investments in safety, dignity, and economic solvency. When people feel comfortable walking, dining, and gathering on their Main Street, foot traffic goes up, local spending increases, and businesses thrive. This is part of a broader shift in the industry. We’re moving away from outdated paper plans that only measured LOS (Level of Service) for cars, toward real-world designs that measure livability, comfort, and modal equity.
