Dude. I just did a Skyrim style session zero starting at a session 0 where there were games, size quests, championships, etc but at the end I assigned STR, etc based on what they did. Pickpocket someone? +1 to that. Win an archery championship? +2 dex.

My session 0 is threefold! It’s mostly non-canon aside from the setting and the characters the players will use. It’s a roleplay encounter, a combat encounter, and a puzzle encounter! That’s my go-to every time. For me, the session zero is more for my players to test out their characters and get used to the style I will be using for DMing the campaign! A lot of the stuff you bring up in terms of comfort level, subject matter, availability, etc, is discussed before my session zero!

I’ve been doing a session -1 before session 0. Session -1 is where we go all the backstory bits together and I ask them to send me something written not long after so I can build a world before the actual session 0 and go from there

Great video!! Something I feel has been an issue in the campaigns I am in is players playing a character that doesn’t fit their own personality/ abilities to adapt to that personality of the character they make. I am a player not a DM but I feel on of our tables is held back because the DM allowed a player to make a character that completely doesn’t fit the world. So setting the world standard would’ve been great in this case!

I’m just starting my first one soon but it’ll be online so I’m planning my session zero to basically be over text the next few weeks. I’m also starting a premade campaign just to give me a starting of idea of how it works but right now I’m struggling with whst to tell each person about the world off the bat because idk what kind of characters they’ll want. It’s hard to plan for that lol
