In 1453, during the siege of Constantinople, Sultan Mehmed II employed the expertise of a Hungarian cannon-founder named Urban (or Orban). Urban had previously offered his services to the Byzantines, but they lacked the resources to support his ambitious designs. Mehmed, however, recognized the potential of Urban’s technology and provided him with the materials and funding he needed. Urban designed and built massive bronze cannons, the most famous being the “Basilica” (sometimes referred to as the “Great Turkish Bombard”). This particular cannon was over 27 feet (8.2 meters) long, with a barrel diameter of about 30 inches (76 cm). It could fire stone balls weighing over 1,500 pounds (around 680 kg).
