Don’t you need like 20mL worth of air to cause an embolism and the entire line only holds like 15mL?

Anesthesia provider here. You need waaaaay more air to cause a deadly air embolism. I do a “bubble study” during echocardiograms sometimes. We purposefully inject 1mL of air and sometimes do it multiple times

In nursing school they told us that you need at least 50ml of air to seriously harm some one. Like this is just making panic

A bubble that size doesn’t harm the patient - animal or human.

as someone who works in emergency services, let me tell you, some air bubbles aren't lethal; yes, there certainly is risk for an air embolism, but for that to occur you'd really have to completely ignore the line and force bubbles in. when we need to administer fluids etc fast, there is no time to check that there won't be air in the tubing. be cautious but don't stress yourself unnecessarily.
