She’s a one-year-old brindle Mastiff, though you wouldn’t know it by the way she carries herself. There’s nothing loud about her. Nothing bold. She moved like someone who’s been unsure for a long time. She watched me, not with suspicion — more like curiosity wrapped in hesitation. The kind of look that says, I want to trust you, but I’m not sure what that’s supposed to feel like. So I sat. No calls, no clapping, no pressure. Just stillness. Just space. And after a while, she took a step forward. Then another. And another. It was slow, like every inch of movement was a decision. When she reached me, she took the treat I offered, so softly it felt like a secret. Then she lowered herself and urinated, submissively — quietly — like her body was still unsure whether kindness was real. That wasn’t misbehavior. It wasn’t defiance. It was the kind of apology dogs give when they’ve never been given a reason to feel safe. And still… she tried. She came out. She looked at me with something like hope. And if you saw it — even for a second — you’d never forget it. Cassandra is not broken. She’s just been given every reason to retreat — and still, she didn’t. She is in a kennel at Devore, as of July 2. Waiting. Hoping. Gentle in ways most people will miss if they’re moving too fast.
