Ukraine's powerful spy agencies fight each other! On Wednesday morning, officers from the SBU, Ukraine's domestic security service, exchanged fire with soldiers linked to the HUR, the country's military intelligence directorate. Video footage showed troops flooding the area in the aftermath, and three people were left wounded. At the heart of the clash is Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, a unit made up of Russian citizens fighting against Moscow alongside Ukraine. On Tuesday, the Corps reported that Kaplunov had been abducted from outside his home by unknown men, and it appealed to both the SBU and HUR for help locating him. The following morning, the SBU announced it had foiled a Russian assassination plot against a Russian opposition figure. Ukrainian media soon identified that figure as Kaplunov. Hours later, the SBU said its investigators came under attack while searching a building in Kyiv connected to the case. Armed men tried to block the search before opening fire, the agency said, and those men were later found to belong to a unit tied to Ukraine's armed forces. Dmytro Lytvyn, a communications adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed that the shooters were HUR personnel. Zelensky has ordered both agencies to publicly explain what caused the confrontation. Kaplunov's whereabouts remain unknown. This is not the first time tensions between the two agencies have boiled over. Kyrylo Budanov, who once led the HUR and now serves as Zelensky's chief of staff, called for a thorough and impartial investigation, saying no one has the right to kidnap servicemen or open fire in Ukrainian cities without consequence.
