Timur kept his word. 🙏 They just didn’t read the fine print of the agreement. Jokes aside, this happened at the siege of Isfizar in 1381. The city had revolted after submitting to Timur, and when it finally surrendered, the defenders begged for mercy. Timur reportedly promised one thing. No blood would be spilled. Relieved, they opened the gates. Instead of a massacre by the sword, thousands were allegedly buried alive beneath earth and rubble. No blood. Promise kept. Whether every detail is perfectly accurate or not, the story became one of the most infamous examples of Timur’s terrifying reputation. “A throne is only worthy of the man who can seize it.” — Attributed to Timur That reputation was his greatest weapon. Like Genghis Khan before him, Timur understood that fear traveled faster than cavalry. Cities surrendered simply because they heard what happened to the last one that resisted. Those who submitted often survived. Those who rebelled after accepting his rule usually became examples. He wasn’t just a butcher either. Every conquest fueled his empire. He stripped defeated kingdoms of their finest architects, artists, engineers, and scholars, hauling them back to Samarkand. The city exploded into one of the wonders of the medieval world, built with the talent of half a continent. His victories were staggering. He crushed the Golden Horde so completely it never recovered. He captured the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I alive after the Battle of Ankara in 1402, throwing the Ottoman Empire into years of civil war just as it seemed unstoppable. He invaded India, sacked Delhi, campaigned from Moscow’s doorstep to Syria, and was preparing to invade Ming China when he died in 1405 at nearly seventy years old. Timur claimed to be carrying on the legacy of Genghis Khan, and in many ways he did. Lightning fast cavalry. Psychological warfare. Ruthless punishment for resistance. Mercy for obedience. He didn’t simply win battles. He made sure the next ten cities surrendered before his army even appeared on the horizon. His empire disappeared within decades of his death, but the stories of skull towers, impossible marches, and cities erased from the map ensured that the name Timur would be remembered long after the empire itself was gone. #timur #uzbekistan #historytok
