“Look at the sunset, it’s beautiful.” 9:28 pm on our last night in Glacier National Park. Over the last 9 years raising babies, I’ve missed a lot of sunsets. Sleep was (is) hard for my kids. They needed me, routine, and darkness to regulate and close their eyes. I kept the room dark, white noise humming, while the sun dipped below the horizon… orange and pink hues just out of sight behind the blackout curtains. I’d lie beside them, trying to remain as still as possible, our bodies pressed together, their tiny breaths on my face, a warm little hand resting on my chest. Sunsets feed my soul. They always have. But between the bliss and survival mode of motherhood, I was too deep in bedtime struggles and the fog of sleep deprivation to process anything beyond the essentials of parenting. I don’t think I realized how much I missed those sunsets that paint the sky so magnificently they take your breath away. I cherish those moments of connection with my children at night still- the deep conversations as they get that micro burst of energy before falling fast asleep, the warm hand holding mine, even as I feel simultaneously exhausted in it. Things are changing fast now. And this is the first summer since having babies that our youngest can stay up until the sun sets between 9 and 10 pm in Montana, and still fall asleep and stay asleep. In other words, the consequences of a 10 pm bedtime aren’t catastrophic. For her. For me however, I’m now staying up sooo late to have my downtime after they go to bed. The sleep deprivation continues. This sunset was one of my favorites of the summer. Our last night in Glacier National Park and the sky lit up every hue from pink to purple to orange. It felt surreal. If you can’t find me these days, I’m catching up on all the sunsets I missed. Someday, maybe I’ll catch up on sleep too—but for now, sunsets come first. #motheranddaughter #glaciernationalpark #unfilteredmotherhood
