Silenced in Carlisle, Penna.—100 years after my People were often silenced here, I was too... I was at an event in Carlisle this week, in the very place where there’s a long history of our Native People experiencing psychological and emotional trauma, and public shaming. In a room of about 90 people, some of whom I know, I was shut down by one person during my talk. I was silenced in front of everyone and no one spoke up for me. Public interruptions did not happen to any storyteller before or after me. The next day, this same person took actions toward me that were not only unethical and unprofessional, they were on a macro level. The harm is not mine to own, yet I feel the impact deeply. The consequences were public, far-reaching, and painful. I feel embarrassed, disheartened, angry, and sad. Despite these emotions, in my opinion, the person who undermines me, underestimates the power of storytelling and the large Community of support I’m part of both near and far. I’m acutely aware that People all across this Land are watching what is unfolding here in Carlisle today. My story carries a sacred power that reaches and resonates with many. I don’t take that responsibility lightly. I know I have a high calling in this place and beyond. It’s way bigger than me. It’s for my People, my Community, and connected to many of you who are reading this message. That’s why I remain here, for now. I come from strong People and Communities shaped by a long line of strong women, especially Grandmothers. I have grit, tenacity, and an endurace that is formed by them, and by many of you! Da’wah’eh—thank you to those who have reached out, even if you didn’t stand up for me in that room. What our Native People endured at Carlisle generations ago is some of what I experience here now. Some patterns are generations old, and they continue. It’s a fuckin’ vortex here! (Sorry Grandmas and Native youth for cussing!) 🧡🧡🧡🧡
