@janklabs: Today I found a chicken dying in my coop and I had to put her down. This was a lot harder on me than I imagined it would be. This is the reality of homesteading
you were more kind than nature is. thanks for not letting her suffer.

One way to help me cope with loss of a farm animal is to remember that we did give them a good life and it’s totally out of our control but the life we gave him was good but every good thing must come to an end. You succeeded at giving them a good life till their last breath.

Trust me it will always hurt. A fox got to my whole flock and it was like losing pets.

You never realize how much you care about something until it’s gone.

Mercy doesn’t exist in nature, it is what it is, but it’s the rare gift we possess to extend to animals from livestock to pets to give them so many good days, to give them medicine when they’re ill and to remove them from experiencing pain. She wouldn’t have recovered but you saw her in her moment of need and gave her dignity and a purpose once she was gone.

Put her in the pumpkin patch like “GIT BACK TO WORK OL’ GIRL!” Jokes aside I hope it wasn’t too early for a dark joke and God bless you for taking good care of her

I’m sorry for loss man, sometimes chickens just croak out of nowhere and breaks our hearts. Just recently I lost my barred rock named Barry. Just give all your girls vitamins and some vertex to boost their immune system so you don’t lose any other.

Sometimes when it gets hot outside due to age and heat chickens drop. It happens to us usually when they hit 2+ years

Looks like your babies might need some protection from pecking. They make little fabric apron looking covers for chicken wish I knew what they were called. Hope you look into it

ever since I was young I have spent time on farms and it's ruff seeing animals die and especially chickens. I was visiting my aunt and uncle and in the evening I held and cuddled an adorable little chicken and the next day I woke up to go cuddle and it was dead. the farm is merciless and that's the price we pay for liveing the beutifal lives we do.

I feel your sadness. I lost my rooster I've had for 8 years, less than a week ago. No more rooster cuddles or crowing from the coop. Makes me sad every time I go to the coop. 😥
