@there_y0u_are: Replying to @Bénie don’t confuse “trendy” with “new”. interior design/style in general is cyclical. just because a piece has been around forever doesn’t mean that it’s a smart investment in your space that you won’t tire of.
Tapestries were super popular in the 80s Tuscan kitchen era too. Find what u love and works for you. If u love “modern eclectic” go for it, but don’t go into debt over it.

Such an interesting debate. I have a vintage 70s rust colored velvet couch that I’ve owned and loved for 15+ years and the style being a “trend” gives me the urge to replace it for the first time because it’s all I see.

It makes me think of black trousers. In 2012 the “timeless” basic black pants were that cigarette style that cut off at the ankles. That store sold you the idea of timelessness but we clearly see a timestamp. The only timeless pieces in your closet are the ones with some meaning/novelty that make you feel cool or pretty or most like yourself.

This is all true, but it’s the kind of thing that you can’t explain to people who aren’t well aquatinted with the muscle of taste. That is who the mass market is for! Let’s not pretend it doesn’t serve a purpose in the market to sell a “pre-made” living room set under the auspices of timelessness

Would your office hours be able to help with rental friendly styling/finishing a new builder apt? I unfortunately don’t have the charm of your beautiful apt and have most of the furniture picked out already!

Why is the goal to be timeless??? The goal should be buying what you like when you *need* something, regardless of what others think. The result is a collected look. Some pieces may be of a certain period and others may prove out to be timeless. Have you ever been to a “timeless” estate sale? They lack personality. Stop worrying about being timeless or being trendy and buy quality things you love. Your home will reflect you, including the change in your taste throughout time.

Girl I said it's not the pieces it's mixing it with mid-century modern that is dating it as you proceed to use my comment and then show mid-century modern mixed with those stable pieces which is what is dating it. Trying to twist it into this is how marketers try to get you so you can try to sell your view point.

Damn. I guess the same applies to leather sofas. I’ve been trying to convince myself the couch my husband wants can work because it’s timeless 😭

You’re right, the point of timeless is personal taste! In decorating my apt & looking at all the inspo that looks good, I was able to tell myself it looks good, but it’s not my style. That’s how we get out of the buying everything new trend. I will be keeping those tips in mind !

Kind of - in my opinion. The Bellini hs been popular for 15 years now and it HOW it and everything else is being put together right now that is going to mark it 2025 with the moody, sophisticated, luxurious, color saturated interiors and soft, luxurious fabrics. The Bellini kind of can be in many different eras. Even the Violetta Calcutta marble/terra cotta vase with olive trees era of 2018-2023.

It doesn’t matter if your space looks outdated in a few years if you actually loved it at the time. There is beauty in the nostalgia that growing and evolving creates. The whole point is to chose things based on you and what you think is beautiful. Timeless is subjective. It is timeless if you love it. Part of the joy of having a space to create in is that it’s constantly changing and evolving with you.

I need to be willingly obtuse about the dark, moody, drenched trends. It looks so dramatic and it's EVERYWHERE but after a couple of days I know it would feel heavy and depressing to me. A Vermont winter doesn't need more darkness.

Literally nothing is timeless. All we can do is try to identify what we actually like, and part of that is waiting for trends to die down and see if you still like them when they’re not cool any more.

theres something to be said about the amount of repros of iconic mcm furniture— they’re iconic for a reason, but buying a reproduction without knowing the history or what a mass market company is duping from is a recipe for “following a trend”. obviously sourcing originals isn’t always possible or accessible but understanding the history of design lends itself to finding iterative pieces that carries the essence without falling into a timestamped trap / a piece that actually works for you and your space that you won’t get sick of in two seconds
