@chaoticforager: Hoping I’m not opening up a huge can of worms here, but I want to be crystal clear about my position on this topic. If I know you, there’s a good chance I’ll share a location, though I may swear you to secrecy (or in some cases, ask you not to visit that spot without me). If I don’t know you, I’m still here and DELIGHTED to help you out with tested advice, great resources, problem-solving assistance, and encouragement, but I’m not going to share spots willy-nilly on the Internet. #foraging #etiquette #foragingedu #mushroomauntie #entitled

I almost never share my foraging spots with anyone, partly for safety, but mainly due to risk of overharvesting/ecological harm. I'm always honoured when someone shares a foraging spot with me!

The best, funnest, and most rewarding part is doing the walking, seeking, learning, and respecting. It's the best part!

I never share my spots- mainly for safety purposes. (People are crazy and stalkers are real- especially if you have a social media presence). And you were being polite and handled that well. They were definitely being entitled.

The best part of foraging is learning why the plants and fungi grow where they do and what impacts them like weather, access to sunlight etc and when you making foraging friends you’ll end up learning their spots along the way! Put in the labor to join this community instead of just taking ✨

Much agreed with everything, I think many get discouraged because they haven’t found any of the “good spots” so they want to know a for sure place instead of putting in the time

People that ask for location clearly aren’t foragers. Half the fun of it is the hunt. The second best part is finding the spot. The best part ofc is eating the food. Have some class and find your own spots!

Respect because I also gatekeep my spots as I know there’s plenty in my town and they can def find somewhere near them instead of me lol

I also don’t share unless I have relationships with the person AND I can trust they will respect Indigenous people and their practices. My spots are connected to life ways and ancestral relationships. I don’t want others destroying land that Indigenous communities have(and continue to) steward

Absolutely a safety and conservation concern, and I’d way rather find species myself in my own nearby habitats by following clues that you and other foragers provide! The hunt is the fun of it.

I’m not a very good forager and would be the kind of person who would benefit greatly from getting some specific location help, yet I still know this is a HUGE nope.

Forgive me if I’ve missed it but have you posted videos with the types of places to look? Asking specifically from an urban perspective; where would be a good place to look in inner city Chicago? I see all kinds of things growing but feel overwhelmed when it comes to identifying and foraging. Thanks for all you do!

Yep! Never apologize or feel the need to explain yourself for choosing to do the right thing. Those that ask for either will reject it anyway

it's OK not want to forage and to buy food instead, randos! foraging isn't for everyone and that is ok

Everything you are saying makes sense. Your safety and the habitat’s safety is important. I am new to foraging and am grateful for this etiquette lesson. I am still learning and there is lots to learn lol

Told one of my spot, one day, was followed step for step for weeks, until the police got the guy and I moved in an other region. Never again.

This is standard foraging/harvesting etiquette. I share my locations very strictly with friends or family.
