@coltenbarnaby: Jesus didn’t die to satisfy God’s wrath. He was lynched by a world that always kills its prophets. James Cone calls it the Cross and the Lynching Tree and it might change everything you think you know about salvation, justice, and who God really is. #christiantiktok #christiannationalism
The fact that people think they're like the Apostles and not the Roman Empire

I really appreciate your logical approach to deconstructing the flaws in Christianity using your theological background

It never made sense to me. The animal sacrifice, the child, and human sacrifice. And also that would never fly today - imagine me telling the judge I’d serve a criminals jail sentence so he could walk free, that’s not justice??????

one of my favorite books. unlearning penal substitution and shifting to a restorative view of the cross instead of punitive and retributive is so necessary.

Hello, I’m an exvangelical (now atheist) who was raised on this theology of Devine punishment and bloodlust. I did not know that there was another kind of Christianity. Thank you.

My mother was a devoted Christian. Not perfect. She was generous and kind to people who had things go wrong in their lives.
Penal substitutionary atonement does not make any sense. My mother did nothing that would merit any punishment.

This theory undercuts the seriousness of sin. The wages of sin is death. We cringe and say what kind of God demands blood? But he gave his own instead. That’s Mercy and love. We are all so uncomfortable with a God who demands justice, until we are selves are wronged and pray for justice ourselves. The idea that Christ died as protest undercuts the value of the life of Christ, and misses the point of his mission on earth, he accomplished protest and teaching in his ministry. Didn’t need to die to make a point. He died to see us free from the sin, to concor dearh, and restore relationship with God.

How do you think this relates to Girard’s scapegoat theory of atonement? Does Cone refer to it at all? I feel like it’s very similar, but I feel uncomfy with lots of Girard’s other philosophical framework.

PSA is definitely one of those theologies that I just could get behind in college, it’s so opposite of Jesus. Am loving your talk on empire, it’s resonating.

I see it like thus: God COULD have saved his own life by destroying the Roman empire that was trying to destroy him, but Jesus dying on the cross was a demonstration that God would rather die brutally than resist evildoers, like he said in the sermon on the mount. In doing so, that same Roman Empire eventually legalized Christianity under Constantine, and even made it the national religion under Theodisius I.

It’s important for us to remember that Christus Victor was a more common theological framework than PSA before Calvin got involved.

Could you elaborate on Romans 6:23? the way i understood it was that the just punishment of sin is death but because christ paid that price for us, we don't have to-- making death unnecessary. "Through Christ our Lord" does that mean just for those who believe and follow Christ or alluding that it was for the world through him. I ask that second part because in John 3:16 it says "whoever believes in him"
