Manichud Daha is a serene, spiritually significant holy lake located at an elevation of roughly (2,400) meters (7,870 feet) within the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park in Kathmandu, Nepal. It is a popular, tranquil trekking and bird-watching destination renowned for both its lush natural beauty and rich mythological heritage. The lake takes its name from a selfless Bodhisattva and King of Saket city, known as King Manichud, who was born with a divine jewel (Mani) embedded in his head. According to both Buddhist and Hindu folklore, a severe famine and epidemic struck his kingdom. To save his people, the king sacrificed his life at this very site by beheading himself and donating the precious jewel. The location subsequently became known as Manichud Daha in honor of his supreme act of charity. Situated in the Shankharapur Municipality, northeast of the Kathmandu Valley, Manichud Daha provides an ideal getaway from the bustling city. The journey to the lake is just as celebrated as the destination itself. Hikers typically access the trail through various routes, offering a mix of biodiversity and panoramic glimpses of the Kathmandu Valley. 📝 The pond is surrounded by dense oak and rhododendron forests, and local folklore claims that birds constantly clear falling leaves from its surface to keep the waters pristine.
