If im not mistaken the ai was told to preserve itself under any circumstances and the “blackmail” was put there on purpose to see if it would use it.

Not really what happened they gave the AI a goal, which was "do your job". No matter what it takes, they never specified a limit and no "matter what it takes" means 0 limits the Ai was literally obeying orders when it tried to preserve itself was just so it can complete the mission
