As someone who worked as a ward clerk in ED, way too many people come in for minor ailments.....coughs,colds,sprains,strains etc can always be seen by a GP. THIS is what causes most of the backlog.

People saying that people with mild ailments are clogging emergency - go one step further and ask WHY. It’s because it’s become TOO EXPENSIVE to see a GP in Australia and it takes TOO LONG.

ED nurse here… Let’s not forget, one of the BIGGEST reasons for ED overcrowding and long wait times is having no beds available, not just ED but the wards. You are waiting hours because there are patients waiting for ward beds, sometimes for 48 hours. There simply is not enough room or staff to support the increasing population and demand. Also, if you are waiting a long time, there is ALWAYS something more critical going on, which may not seem fair, and everyone has their own situation, but please remember you have no idea what’s going on in the whole department, and if you are waiting a long time, consider yourself lucky bc being seen in less than 10 minutes is never good.

People should stop going to the emergency room when they can just go to their GP. (Not saying this is your mum) but so many people do this which is why people don’t get beds and seen by doctors.

These comments are wild. To be admitted at the hospital you need to go to emergency. Even if you see a GP and they send you there you get a letter and GO TO EMERGENCY.

I've never waited more than 2 hours in emergency because I only go there when I'm deathly sick.

There’s no ward beds, the politicians are blatantly lying to everyone. It’s not just and ED or Ambo issue, there’s not enough beds for patients on the wards. ED is now caring for ward patients, +48 hours in ED because there is no where for them to go..

Years ago I had to spend hours sitting on the floor miscarrying in front of everyone. When I did get in, they scanned me and realised it was an ectopic pregnancy. Told me I might die, put me in for surgery straight away, I didn’t get a moment to digest it let alone chat with anyone. Was the coldest and most heartless encounter I’ve had. Fun times.

If you have been given meds and discussed how to diagnose, you are being treated just because you are not in a bed doesn’t mean you’re still waiting to be seen.

To everyone in the comments PLEASE email your local MP , email the health minister and demand increased Public health funding . The floor on the waiting room is full … there are NO beds . Staff suffer

One of the biggest issues is not lack of GP/urgent care/telehealth options.. it’s because we can’t get patients out of hospital safely!! Lack of community support/NDIS/residential care beds etc etc etc.

Does Victoria not yet have urgent care clinics? Instead of being in emergency could you have tried a clinic instead. I’m in nsw - they’re pretty good and much quicker

When my appendix burst they gave me an IV after 10 hours and sent me back to the waiting room for a further 12 hours before I went straight into surgery, then sent home immediately after. Horridddd

We waited 8 hours while my Mum coughed up blood clots and I assume now because she was dying they didnt triage her though right away 😭 that night changed us as a family and gave us the insight you're getting now.

if ED is full it usually means the hospital is full & there's a bed block. unfortunately this time of the year there are soo many elderly getting sick, being hospitalised & then needing aged care placements. they usually stay in the hospital bed until an aged care placement is found. sometimes this can take months if there's dementia, sundowners & violent behaviours
