A peritonsillar abscess is a pocket of pus that forms next to the tonsil, usually as a complication of untreated or worsening tonsillitis. Classic Symptoms Think “one-sided severe throat infection.” • Severe one-sided throat pain • Pain with swallowing (odynophagia) • Muffled “hot potato” voice • Difficulty opening the mouth (trismus) • Fever • Drooling • Uvula pushed to the opposite side What’s happening? Bacteria spread from the tonsil into the surrounding tissue, forming an abscess that pushes the tonsil inward and the uvula away. Why it matters If untreated, it can lead to: • Airway compromise • Spread of infection into deeper neck spaces • Sepsis Treatment Management typically includes: • Drainage of the abscess • Antibiotics (commonly amoxicillin-clavulanate or clindamycin) AFTER drainage of the abscess • Steroids to reduce swelling • ENT evaluation if severe Clinical Pearl If a patient has severe throat pain on one side, trismus, and a muffled voice, always look for uvular deviation, a major clue for peritonsillar abscess. #peritonsillarabscess #medicalconditions #health #nurse #nursepractitioner
