I’m so thankful that my Big mama had a huge part in raising me and my brother. We had a traditional “black” experience. I’m talking the works! The reunions, fish fry’s, waking up hearing Joyce meyers, the church and choir, playing with my cousins, that black country life, I thank my mom for making sure that we were present in that! My Big mama also taught my mom how to do hair on a doll before I was born cause “she was not bout to have her gran baby lookin crazy!” 😝 I also appreciate my mom making sure my German heritage and white American family was apart of my upbringing. Now, could she fully understand- no- but she could make sure we knew we were loved. Of course you grow up and you have the weird outcast moments and the real world racism… but I’m so glad I grew up the way I did because now I can see people for people not their race. I can blend in with different cultures and be apart of a beautiful human experience (even when humans are scary) one thing my mom as I got older said she wished she done was made sure we got in therapy. Especially my brother. My father being absent- it didn’t really affect me, but a boy not having a dad around especially a strong black man to be present and show him the way up is super traumatic.

it's better when your mom is black because you are raised as black

wow- I’m a white mum with a mixed son and daughter- I am aware of my children’s identity- I am their mum and would do anything for them- I’m a lioness and protect them with every fibre of my body my Nigerian husband thinks i’m over protective- please don’t put all your relationships issues down to race - mums and daughters can have difficult times during teenage years

that is unfortunate 😢 im sorry you had that experience. my mom is white and she is the sweetest person that I love to death. I have never felt like I was never her daughter but I completely understand its not like that for other mixed people.

So as a white mom raising a mixed girl (she’s 3), I am curious to know if there is anything that could have helped you feel more understood ?

White moms to mixed kids have the obligation to learn! Read, educate and try to understand your children! Help your children with their identity, know and share both sides of their children’s culture. Biggest one for me as a mummy to 3 amazing children, fight! Always fight, protect and hear what your children say and how they feel! I recognise and learn about the struggles they will have and always ready to check myself!

would it be different if your mom was black? where you raised in the white or black community? where do you feel you resonate more?
