“Size is an issue,” says Mary Lewis, Creative Director at Lewis Moberly. At D&AD Festival 2026, Mary and Lisa Smith explored what happens when creative companies get swallowed up by bigger institutions, and why “it destroys creativity, and it destroys a sense of belonging.” So, is bigger really better? WE SPEAK DANGME. Let us have this conversation honestly. If you are from Klo (Krobo) and someone asks, “What language do you speak?” The answer is Dangme. Not “Krobo language.” If you are from Ada, the answer is Dangme. Not “Ada language.” If you are from Sɛ (Shai), the answer is Dangme. Not “Shai language.” If you are from Osudoku, the answer is Dangme. Not “Osudoku language.” If you are from Gbugbla (Prampram), the answer is Dangme. Not “Prampram language.” If you are from Kpone, the answer is Dangme. Not “Kpone language.” If you are from Nugo (Ningo), the answer is Dangme. Not “Ningo language.” If you are from Agɔtsom (Agotime), the answer is Dangme. Not “Agotime language.” WHY DOES THIS MATTER? Because the name of a language is part of the identity, history and heritage of its people. Our traditional areas have their own histories, communities, customs and dialectal variations. We may pronounce certain words differently. We may use different expressions. Some vocabulary may vary from one area to another. That does not automatically make each traditional area a separate language. Our traditional areas are different homes within the wider Dangme linguistic and cultural community. Ada → Dangme Agɔtsom → Dangme Gbugbla → Dangme Kpone → Dangme Klo → Dangme Nugo → Dangme Osudoku → Dangme Sɛ → Dangme So when someone says: “I speak Krobo.” Ask: “Do you mean you speak Dangme from the Klo/Krobo traditional area?” When someone says: “I speak Ada.” Ask: “Do you mean you speak Dangme from Ada?” The same principle applies to the other Dangme traditional areas. This is not about denying the uniqueness of any traditional area. It is about naming our language correctly. ONE DANGME LANGUAGE. MANY TRADITIONAL AREAS. MANY DIALECTAL VARIATIONS. MANY HOMES. ONE HERITAGE. Let us teach our children the difference. Let us correct the terminology when we hear it. Let us stop allowing the names of our traditional areas to replace the name of our language. Our traditional area can tell you where we come from. Our language tells you what language we speak. DANGME IS OUR LANGUAGE. #Dangme #DangmeLanguage #DangmePeople #DangmeCulture #DangmeHeritage
