@listeningtour: Can you become part of a nation simply by feeling like you belong? For our interviewees, the answer to what makes someone English is refreshingly straightforward: if you’re born here—you’re English. But if you come here and feel English? For them: that counts too. It’s an inclusive view—one that stands in stark contrast to how complicated this question can often become. And yet, their answer is also laced with something else: humour, irony, even bafflement. They wonder why anyone would want to come to England—the weather’s awful, they say, the food worse. And: the country’s past doesn’t exactly fill them with pride. But still: if people arrive, and they’re happy here? “That’s brilliant.” Over the past year and a half we’ve asked questions about identity hundreds of times—watched thousands of debates on the subject take shape in our comments—but: rarely has anyone answered with such ease, openness and a touch of self-deprecation.
