When I found my own mom deceased—called 911 and said I have 61 yo f unresponsive, CPR not initiated, blood pooling and rigor mortis.. that’s when I realized no one should be desensitized to death to that extent.

I had a doctor look at me, dead in the eyes, after my worst code ever and said “this wasn’t your fault, this wasn’t anyone’s fault.” Hugged me and brought me a Diet Coke later. He’s still one of my fave docs and someone I’ll never forget

Being one of 2 “dirty “ nurses on a Covid unit, standing in the hall alone as 2 patients starting coding at the same time, having to make a split second decision on which one had the better chance of making it and to run to, knowing how long it would take the code team to come get all the gear on and get back there with me. Starting cpr on one, knowing the other person was dying alone. 20 yrs in nursing and covid ruined me.

When my husband and I were watching the PITT and he was constantly horrified at everything happened and I shrugged and said “yeah it’s realistic but it’s also 100x worse, this is nothing” I realize it shouldn’t be nothing.. to anyone 😭

I realised I was hearing the voice of a patient who I'd coded roughly 6 months before. I couldn't tell you how long I'd been hearing her. I ended up needing a psych admission for full blown psychosis, brought on by PTSD.

instead of cold I got really angry at the shit treatment patients were receiving (due to staffing, lack of resources etc) moral injury every day. realized I needed therapy or I was going to lose my job for losing my temper on management.

Covid broke me. My best friend, also an RT called me to say she was heading into ER, she has covid and she loved me. 8 weeks later she was gone.

i was beginning to HATE every pt that came into the ED. i was so angry and hostile. it was NOT me. i left critical care for PACU and got some professional help and things are much better.

Some situations just hit different. You can be a badass 6/7 days, but something on that 7th day might just break your heart. Something about the pitch of that grieving wail, something about that story. We all have our wall.

Nobody wants to talk about it, because nobody ever really listens. I sit and cry most days multiple times. Paramedic for over 20 years. It hurts, really does. Real pain that nobody understands.

I was at a swimming hole when a little girl drowned. Her uncle carried her to shore and I started CPR. I got her back after 4 rounds and she went with the paramedics. I walked away and continued swimming. My husband was in shock and asked if I needed a minute. I didn’t even consider if it was traumatic I just went on like it didn’t happen. Crazy really. Just numb.

I'm a Critical Care Paramedic. I didn't know. I was approached by an instructor and he told me he was worried about me. I was offended but I met with the counselor to get everyone off my back and got the PTSD dx.
