I will be trying this tonight and report back in the morning. I have been averaging 3 hours of sleep the last 2 weeks and I am miserable.

You can also take a random word like morbid, and start using each letter to think of other words. Like M for mighty, melody, melancholy, mercy…. O for obvious, obfuscate, orbit, ostrich…… and so on. I have never, no matter how wired I am, gotten through an entire word.

I can go to sleep easily, it’s the staying asleep that gets me

For some reason me imagining my body is doing a perpetual somersault (or spinning if that's more your thing) sometimes helps. I can imagine the sensation of doing a flip on a trampoline and just hold that sensation as if I reality was glitching and repeating that fraction of a moment until I let it go. Eventually my body will feel it and quickly my body will just release into sleep. The sensation mimics the sensation of transitioning into sleep. I now just realized it could be easier to imagine the sensation of sleeping on a gently rocking hammock or on a playground swing. I think it's more the imagining of a repetitive and gentle physical sensation that hypnotizes the brain into sleep.

So weird, but just recently I started going through the alphabet and thinking of every woman’s name that starts with A, B, C, etc. Then doing the same with men’s names… and that has worked great for me. In case it helps anyone.

I choose a building from my childhood (house, friend’s house, school) and walk through them in my mind. Usually works.

I pretend that I'm walking slowly into a massive dark foggy room with like 100 ft tall black walls. with a single window that lets in moonlight. for some reason that helps me sleep

I have a trick that works everytime and I still don’t use it even when I’m desperate bc once I’m asleep I’m a blink away from another day at work 😭 (my trick is imagining a chair in an empty plain room, but it’s always a different chair, my goal is to notice every detail of the chair that I can. It’s the most boring thing ever and it shuts off the nonstop fleeting thoughts and I’m out… also, idk why a chair… it’s just a boring object I picked one time like 20 years ago and it never fails me)

I just remove my pillow and lay down with my head on my hands like I used to sleep in class and tell myself I only have 5 min to rest and then suddenly I'm out for hours 🤣

I do the abc game. I choose a category. like plants. then have to start with the letter a, b, c... apple tree, bachelor buttons, calla lily... it's so boring that I never make it to z 😂

This is why I have never gone to a sunrise set at a music festival because I panic when the sun starts to rise I got literal sleep trauma. I’d hear them cheering when the sun rose and I’m in my tent. Crying.

Makes sense because that is one way I notice I am falling asleep. Because I will be thinking a bunch of different things in the same setting. Might not make sense but I intuitively have been doing this.

I use paradoxical intention. Tell myself I need to get up and do/check something and that I can’t fall asleep because of that. Works like a charm.
