In Mexico it's normal practice to have a wake for 24 hours in your house! People visit and stay up all night then bury the deceased the next day. I'll never forget my grandmother's funeral.

My grandmother shared with me that she remembered when the funeral home came, brought a casket, and embalmed her father at their home. js

I love that you touched on the fear. I have a communications degree and went to mortuary school and I think early horror movies contributed to that fear.

This was still a practice where I grew up during the early 1950’s. Often, folks brought their loved ones back to the home for the wake. Most Black folk would also hang a black wreath on the door of the family of the deceased. If the body was embalmed at the funeral home, often times if we ( teenagers) were outside when the funeral car( hearse) brought the body, the Funeral Director would give us a few dollars each to help carry the casket into the house. And boy, that wasn’t easy. I swear hallways and entry ways were not very wide!! Good fun funeral fact!!!

A co worker of mine from Ireland said his father was prepped in the bathroom and waked in the living room. This was about 5 years ago, I guess these practices are still done in some places
