Bro not everyone needs to learn asl. if somebody wants to, great. however I will probably encounter MAYBE 1 deaf person in my entire life and I dont have the drive to learn a whole different language if I'm not going to use it (1)

you know, I'm pretty good at asl, and tried to get others into it. but the deaf community is so mean to hearing people, esp those that try to teach others, and i didn't want to put that on my friends

I didn't know this! I begged my hearing+speech therapist to teach me ASL but he said it wasn't necessary because I only have high frequency hearing loss 😑 I wanna learn ASL so I can chat with more people!

The way I learn that won’t help me. I hate to use them, but I learn better with stuff like Duolingo where it’s like. I’m actually doing it not just looking at someone and expected to retain the information like I need to practice. I need to be tested.

it's not that easy. im late deaf and pay a private tutor $100/hr to teach me ASL. you can learn some basic sign language from videos and Bill's stuff is great as a supplement to actual instruction but it can not be your only source for learning. you will never become fluent from just that. you need to interact with fluent/native Deaf signers. and just going to events isnt good enough either because it puts the onus on the Deaf community members tonthen teach hearing folks who show up and they aren't being paid. I am deaf but i never ask my Deaf friends to teach me ASL outside of when im specifically paying them for that service.

I started dating a Deaf person and within 4 months I had a new job at a community college with tuition benefits. It took working over a year to make my schedule work but I am finishing my last ASL class now. 💕 We have a house together now. 🤟
