your ship of Theseus analogy only applies IF consciousness is emergent, which we don't know. but many theories and studies today are suggestive of consciousness being fundamental, or in other words, brains may be receivers of consciousness rather than projectors of it. if this is true, I would assume that the transplants would be a non-issue in the context of identity.

This feels astonishingly close to how it's explained in the books that murderbot works. They mix organic and silicon processing. It's clear that a lot of their AI is sentient and their society is built on mass slavery.

I suppose if you use your own stems cells it’s still you. Brain organoids taking over the brain would be an issue. I suppose we would have to stabilize the implanted organoid by making them adult cells.
