The idea for Base Scent that we launched at @futuresocietyofficial actually came from a series of experiences I had in the fragrance industry. I have talked a lot publicly about how mind blown I have been by perfumers and how their minds work. As a scientist who has worked in skincare and haircare, I’ve come to see fragrance formulation as an entirely different way of seeing the world, and that has been deeply inspiring. Perfumers by training have to think a lot about harmony and balance and the overall environment. This results in them never judging scents on their own, but seeing them all equally as something that can bring beauty and complexity if used just right. They also work with what is there (like the scent of the skin, or the scent of the formula base), not try to eliminate it. I think this is a beautiful way of thinking. To them this might be normal, but coming from skincare and haircare I was fascinated by this because the formulation approach in those worlds is more reductive and zero sum. Bad smell? Remove it. And because deodorants and antiperspirants come from that side of the industry, that has been the approach: complete removal. Had deodorants been formulated by perfumers to begin with, I think this product category would look completely different. Base Scent is built that way. Its not a deodorant, its not a perfume. Its scent care designed to make your skin smell good on its own. And we are just scratching the surface of the potential here. To all the perfumers I have met across the last 5 years: Daniela Andrier, Olivia Jan, Phil Martel, Karen Uchiyama Cho, jacek, Michael Nordstrand, Samantha Yu, thank you so much for being so generous with your knowledge and your perspective with me. #perfumetok #founder #Science #deodorant
