@clinicallynas: This Princeton study is all over my FYP and I refuse to read it. It's biased and cannot be generalised, its essentially loo roll. Asd research should be representative. #autism #actuallyautistic #audhd #neurodivergent #neurodivergenttiktok #SEN #learningdifficulties
oh thank fuck you're saying this. I'm so fucking tired of these uncritical people. ALSO why the fuck are we celebrating categorisation of autistic people by NON AUTISTIC people.

Absolutely and why are women with ADHD and Autism being diagnosed as EUPD? Like it’s no coincidence 😬

there are so many other issues such as lack of late diagnosed participants and or representation of intellectual and emotional differences.

you are rejecting a study which you refuse to read.... cool.

Also they compared them to their "non-autistic" siblings but did not say whether they assessed those siblings for autism, or whether they had ever been assessed. Who wants to bet that among those non-autistic siblings are a lot of actually autistic sisters?

I’ve skimmed the study and I can’t find any info on the data set and info on ethnicity or gender of the sample used in the study. Does anyone know what the data breaks down as?

damn. I haven't had time/too lazy to look into the study but it's so disappointing to find out the sample is so narrow. thank you for bringing this up. disappointing but not surprising I haven't seen any other creators bring this valid criticism up. I do think though that people reporting on a new study don't necessarily mean they support it

Unless autistic people are doing the study I will not trust see it as valid research. How is a neurotypical to explain my disability to the medical community and the rest of the world. When they have no idea how I live?

Here’s where the data on sex and race is in the article, “Decomposition of phenotypic heterogeneity in autism reveals underlying genetic programs” in case anyone couldn’t find it. It’s in some of the extended figures at the bottom and in their methods section. Extended Fig. 5 shows sex by how they grouped them into the classes of autism they claim they identified. It was ~80% male for each of the 4. Extended Fig. 7 shows racial background of those that were genotyped, notably without quantification. But from their methods for genome-wide association study they describe that they only used participants with “European ancestry” which was “determined by a self-reported race of white” and all stats for this analysis were “based on populations of European ancestry”. So they’re only using self-identified white mostly male participants’ data to create these “classes” of autism. But still categorising different populations they genotyped with it. I’m going to read the peer review report to see if they even mentioned it because !?!?!?!?? Even an undergrad should be able to identify and roast them for this design

Could you imagine how revealing a study of solely adult black women with autism could be. Or like ADHD in young girls with lower income families.

And the fact that studies done on autistic people are only on those formally diagnosed, when there’s a huge issue with POC and people of lower socioeconomic backgrounds not having access to diagnoses is appalling. How can we possibly take them seriously?

The fact they’re saying there’s a genetic link with these autism subtypes it honestly feels like eugenics. It doesn’t seem too crazy to think they’ll start working on or funding a pre birth test for autism and use it as justification for abortions. Sending love to the autistic community this week, it’s rough out here

Also, it’s just ONE study! Valid, meaningful, significant research takes time. They need to replicate the study with more diverse samples and work on the limitations SEVERAL MORE TIMES before it holds any weight. We can use this study as a starting point for further research, but we can’t take this study’s findings to be true and the only right way to look at it until there is soooo much more research done. I also want to know a lot more about their exclusion criteria and how thoroughly they looked into other possible causes for people’s autistic traits. This is especially important if people are making claims that autism (a DEVELOPMENTAL disorder) can magically show up later in life without symptoms in early development. I don’t trust that they ruled out all other possible causes for those symptoms in those people. The same traits can be due to trauma, brain injury, and so many more things… Also, what did they use? Self report measures? Did they witness and observe these behaviours in various real world settings to know if these people are reporting their traits accurately and truthfully? Most people sharing this research on TikTok don’t actually know how to read research or think critically, and it pisses me off

Audhd girlie here. It’s wild to me that I went undiagnosed and misdiagnosed for 40 years because during the period of my life when I would’ve been diagnosed no one was even considering females having autism 😳 so I just got passed around and medicated and sent to therapy

I instinctively hate it - I'm gonna take some time and think about it again later but. seriously unimpressed atp.
and conversely there have been so many great studies - the unis of Texas and Edinburgh collaborating in follow up studies to The Double Empathy Problem and Diversity in Social Intelligence are something I wish I would see more on my fyp

I also hate that they focus on children too. Which often means that the evidence is second hand, coming from either parents or teachers. If they used adults, we could give firsthand responses. There's less guessing involved.

You make a very good point, but this just means when universities put out a request for people to engage, you have to engage. A study only has so many resources to call upon, even at an ivy league school. Also studies only count if the findings can be reproduced so...
