I’m in the US and take 3-4 weeks off per year and unlimited sick days. It’s not federally mandated but a lot of corporate jobs offer these benefits. Plus they pay my health insurance premium for my high deductible plan

Salaried employees usually have PTO as part of their total compensation package. Hourly employees often do not. So hourly workers often can't afford to take a day off without pay when they're sick.

I get 6 weeks PTO per year. Some companies have unlimited PTO. You are just required to make sure your job gets done. There is a Federal law called FMLA that gives you 12 weeks per year for your own disability or to care for a family member or to bond with a baby. That is every state. FMLA is unpaid but some states have a paid FMLA. Those states that have a paid FMLA collect taxes to cover that. But you are correct it is important to pick the right companies to work for. Decent companies have good PTO and parental leave.

MA resident here! I personally think the income tax structure should be flipped and we should be paying the bulk to state and the smaller cut to fed govt.

We live in Massachusetts, but my husband's company is based in Minnesota. He has unlimited time off. Obviously, if you abuse it, you could lose your job, but technically he has no limits on his time off.

It’s important because if the job gives such low PTO it will most likely carry over to other things and not be the best place to work. Professional jobs usually offer more than hourly.

Most corporate jobs have more paid company holidays in the US than the UK bank holidays. Most US corporate jobs offer short and long term disability at no employee cost, UK has very limited disability coverage. And the UK maternity pay is such a low wage from weeks 9-52.

In competitive industries, you may get 4 weeks of vacation plus 5-10 days of personal leave which you can use for sick days or other unscheduled needs. Retail and service industries are the least generous. And part time workers don’t get much in most states
