The very fact that Khmer Krom exist and retained a distinct Khmer culture is the very proof that today’s Khmer culture DOES NOT derive from Siam influence. Why? Because during the time Cambodia was a tributary state to Siam (and not a colony like Thai like to say), Siamese control was geographically LIMITED to northwestern Cambodia, far from the Mekong Delta which is where the Khmer Krom are located (Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, An Giang). The FACT that there are pagodas with DISTINCT Khmer architecture that are over 100 years old located in South Vietnam, which once again was never under Siamese control, is the PROOF of a UNIQUE Khmer culture. The Khmer Krom have been passing on Khmer heritage for centuries even under Vietnamese control. They are the LIVING PROOF of a distinct Khmer culture and identity. No doubt that Thailand and Cambodia have shared influences between each other. But the Thai people need to stop lying to themselves and others about the degree of their influence on Cambodia.
