It’s not a hard concept once grasped, these modes if in the same key, are the SAME notes, the emphasis is just placed on a different note, and each mode works best with certain chord progressions used from the Major scale which is in fact… the same as the Ionian mode.

so d dorian is a c ionian but starting on the 2nd note, and so on? if I read g dorian I'd be in my f scale notes but start on g instead? How is this usefully applied in writing or playing music?

So they are also different scales or “default patterns.” I would also argue that they are different keys in the same way we tend to think of C major and C minor as “keys.” I wish we taught students to hear all of the modes in this way. Changes the flavor of the harmonic motion 1,4,5 etc
