No. We have them put their income in a Roth IRA to the $6k max. Then save so that when they move out they can pay first month and deposit on own. Goal is to be independent and saddling them w bills rather than helping them get ahead on Roth etc will almost guarantee they will have same struggles you did. We’ve let them level up. They are the most responsible financially independent young people I know.

my kids all worked at least a little so they would have spending money and I made them pay for anything over and above what I was willing to spend on things.

My 24 year old son pays his car payment and car insurance. I still pay his cell phone. When he was in school no I didn’t make him get a job I wanted him to focus on his studies and athletics. He works two jobs now and just graduated with his BA from college.

My parents had me start paying for my car insurance 6 months before I began driving so 15.5. Then I paid for car insurance and gas until I moved out at 18. I did move back home for about 4 months when I was 19 but I covered my cell phone, car insurance, gas and then all of my moving expenses.

Daughter in college and expected to work. I have her help with the maintenance and repairs of the car I have her. And she has to pay for her daily expenses, if she wants to eat out buy clothes things like that.

Once my son is driving he can pay for his gas, oil changes and car insurance. Otherwise I’ll teach him how to save responsibility and budget his spending. I’m a single mama with no help and the added costs of him driving I cannot afford to absorb. Though I wish I could be as generous as the commenter who puts their kids money in a Roth IRA.

If they are in school, we pay for everything, but if they do have a part-time job, they have to pay for their gas

Car insurance, credit card, gas. We do a partial reimbursement on insurance and gas in his savings account. This is mostly to get him accustomed to the process, responsibility, and timing.

I help my kids get their first car after that if they want to drive they need to pay for their insurance and their own gas. if they want a phone they pay for that themselves. they're not going to learn to value anything if you do everything for them
