@naomimarika: Uchinaaguchi or shimakutuba is to describe the indigenous languages spoken on the Ryukyu islands. After taking an intro class to speaking Uchinaaguchi- i decided to practice with my Obaachan what I learned. Here we practiced two kinds of introductions- formal (keigo the honorific speech) and informal. In Japanese language and Okinawan languages, there are different words and phrases when speaking to superiors, elders, super formal social settings, etc. And lemme tell you this wasn’t easy. Even though I can speak fairly good Japanese, the mouth shapes and pronunciations were so diff in Okinawan…you could tell I was struggling 💩 Also I introduced myself using my mother’s maiden name which is ‘Kishimoto’ and helllla uchinanchu last name.
