I’ve literally been prompted by other players at the table to make inside checks against them because they are intentionally trying to role-play out part of their backstory or get me to get information the same way the GM would so I disagree with that point. I wouldn’t insight check every little thing, but if it is very clear, they are trying to get me to recognize something. I’m definitely gonna insight check them. Or I might investigation check them or I might deception check them or something.

I agree with all but the insight checks. it has occasionally led to really interesting story moments, catching my sorcerer in a lie (she's very good at lying)

I agree with all of this, however, as a DM, if my players constantly reject plot hooks and avoid the quests I've created and maps I've built, they're gonna get railroaded. I'm not forcing people to solve puzzles and things a certain way, but it's disrespectful of the DM's time and effort to intentionally avoid all of the content they worked very hard to craft for you. The DM should also be having fun. the same way you don't want them always saying no to your ideas as a player, you shouldn't always say no to their ideas as a DM

I feel like that last one varies a bit because it can be really frustrating to have the players agree to a certain plot when pitching the game and then refuse to take the plot hooks. That's only if a larger plot was agreed upon in session zero though.

I haven't played dnd but my partner is really into it and showed me baldurs gate to dip my toes in. why is making choices that your character would make bad? I thought that was the entire point of playing an rpg.

What about playing someone who is pretending to be a dark broody loner, but then you fold the instant someone brings out baked goods?

I say it's what my character would do, but it's because he's nicer than I would be 😔

My longest played DnD character was a normal human with alive parents and a great family life. I high key asked for a “beach episode” so she could bring the party home to meet her parents. Mom made everyone pancakes.

There are some moments for insight checks because if a player is known to do something or lie and they say something you aren’t normally to trusting of there words

It took a whole 4 hour session one to get the players to actually form a party together. Istg I was ready to walk, it was awful.

In my game, i allow insight rolls against other players, but I have them roll to GM(I play on roll20) this way the player in sighting doesn’t know if it’s a persuasion or deception roll. That way there can be secrets and distrust if it’s called for in character

You know what? I said that. I've said it several times, and I will continue to say it several times. You know what I'll also say? Session 0's are for the dungeon master to get a better overlook of the players, and I will never apologize for insisting on one.

ive never played dnd but i think i would be easier to play a loner first cuz then you can try and learn the mechanics first then get into the role play when you have a better grasp on the basics

Yes, to all of this, within reason. You can have a dark and brooding character as long as they still engage with the story and grow. “It’s what my character would do” only if it is not legitimately harmful to the party and is healthily communicated between players and dm. Insight checks on PCs can be good if done for emotional purposes or when your characters (not you) have a reasonable doubt and respect the results of the roll afterwards no matter what. Players changing plans is to be expected as long as they still respect the overall story you’ve constructed for them to explore, engage with, and influence through their actions. I have little excuse for the 3rd point about bits
