a lot of people refuse to cover asbestos tiles because it traps the asbestos underneath and then future asbestos tests won’t show what’s actually underneath so then it’s a higher risk because if people are unaware they are there and take them up it’s then a health hazard

Asbestos tiles are very low grade to the point that an analyst wouldn’t bother air testing it after removal. Opening the windows and doors can carry any loose fibres out. Hence why most people will remove them with no care. They are classed in a bitumen so they are fine as long as they are not disturbed. Screeding is fine if they are in good condition.

I screeded over quarry tiles in my current house, then used underlay and then laid my herringbone laminate and it’s been absolutely fine

Can’t you just pour some self levelling concrete on it. If you do a thin layer than surely you can put whatever on top? (I’m just a girl so I wouldn’t even know)

we have asbestos tiles in ours too + everyone on tiktok was saying to just cover them, i contacted a local asbestos company and they said safer to leave them and put flooring on top than rip them up so you’re right!!

Most councils offer a free asbestos collection service. We had the exact same tiles as you all across our downstairs. The type of asbestos in the tiles is only harmful over years of constant inhalation, it’s really not that deep 🫶🏻

B&Q do an asbestos test you can do yourself i believe. It might be worth doing that so you know exactly where you stand ❤️

So far all the websites I’ve read for the uk, on asbestos tiles and what is best whether that be removing or encapsulating them, it seems that the safer option from what I can read is to encapsulate them but that’s only if they aren’t broken dry or cracked. But to encapsulate them you need to use a sealant that is recommended for asbestos then use a primer and the partner screeding mix.

Girl just get them removed. I had an asbestos ceiling removed along stairs/landing and it cost £700 altogether. Its gonna cost a lot more to rip up the new floor with self levelling when you decide to remove it. Regulations are changing constantly and there may be a time when you won’t be unable to sell /let out a house with asbestos inside. If you know it’s in your property you need to declare it.

Just screed over them I do it on a daily basis, aslong as they ain’t loose just use a prime and grit primer. And for the quarry tiles do a damp test because they hold moisture if they have moisture in them you just need to DPM them and then apply the screed

hey so we just took the asbestos tiles up ourselves 🤷♀️and then put a self leveler on the top. once it dried, we put on the underlay and then lay the laminate

these abestos tiles contain atmost 4% avg. they are in a bitumen resin type thing so fibres are not "dusty" ... to screed over them, if they are loose its not good , the screed can pop and crack and crumble.. aslong as they arnt being sanded away, its fine...
