its like "how the turn tables" deviated from "how the tables have turned".

You can’t have your cake and eat it too still means the same thing even though it’s backwards. I had it described to me as “you can’t have your cake and eat it and then still have a cake” so it makes sense either way, the one people say just takes longer to explain.

‘curiosity killed the cat’ The original phrase was “curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back”

The customer is always right is my personal favorite. It should be "The customer is always right in matters of taste".

Oh I forgot! Another one I like is the word MOOT. The way we use it today would be like “that’s a moot point,” meaning it’s irrelevant so no need to talk about it. But it originally meant that it’s not talked about enough and therefore deserves more attention. We kept using it wrong so often that we eventually just changed the meaning entirely

“You can’t let just one bad apple in the group influence your opinion of the whole group!” It infuriates me to hear people say this… they ALWAYS use “one bad apple” wrong!

bootstraps! it's meant to mean an impossible, absurd task - you cant pull YOURSELF up by your own bootstrap. but people use it to mean you need to work hard and do it yourself

I was REALLY hoping you’d say the master of one phrase. I also love learning about these things and that one has always been one of my favorites.

‘Birds of a feather flock together’. The original phrase was “Birds of a feather flock together until the cat comes.”

Not really a misused saying, but my favorite response to it:
"The early bird gets the worm."
True, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
