A lot of people are saying Red lost just because of the chess image, but that is only a surface-level take. If you actually read Alter Ego by Eva Eller, the story makes it clear. The narrator says she now sits on the white side of the board and refers to the Red Queen as her former self. That means the alter ego, which Red represents, did not lose. It became the dominant identity. This is not a simple win-or-lose situation between two characters. It is a psychological shift within one person. The alter ego represents her repressed self, the confident and unapologetic version of her. By the end of the story, that side takes full control. The person in white is no longer the old self. It is the alter ego now wearing her face. So no, Red was not defeated. Red changed roles and took the white seat. The checkmate does not symbolize Red's loss. It symbolizes the transformation. In Freud’s theory, this is the Id overpowering the Ego after too much suppression. The important part is not the piece that fell, but who is holding the board now.
