I love their dynamic on the show but there'd be no difference if he was 19 and hadn't finished high school yet. Still an odd start but he did not need to be 17

What weirds me out even more is the fact that Emily and Montana themselves are 11 years apart. So you can’t even pretend that the age gap isn’t real with the actors vs the characters.

a big part of that is the 17 year old didn't have to carry the child though in the role reversal, she would not only have to carry it but in a lot of unfortunate circumstances would be expected to raise it

Now I am in no way excusing the relationship, but in the context of the show, their relationship is “justified” by the time period and community it is set in. Small towns in Texas would rather a minor marry a 30 year old than have an unwed mother and baby born out of wedlock. Maybe audiences are more willing to accept this plot because “it wouldn’t happen today/this is something from a different time period.” I’m just wondering if this had a modern setting, would it be popular or even make it out of the writer’s room?

I actually hated this spinoff, not only was it SO GROSS.. it just flat out wasnt even funny.. one episode got a chuckle out of me, the rest of the time I was just annoyed with everyone.

I think the lying about their age thing is really interesting when it happened on Young Sheldon, and even them having the baby and having to co-parent, but they should not have gotten married. Or at least if they got married, it should have been entirely because of their parents judging them into it, because that does happen. But it’s weird that they seem so happy in their relationship. I would be so grossed out and just feel constantly guilty if I found out I had been with a minor by accident

I do think the tone of it being a sitcom makes it a lot easier to handle too. like it's really played up that Georgie was in the wrong, that Mandy was horrified, that the familes support them, ect. It makes it a lot lighter than if it were reflective of real life.
