@type1amy: It’s amazing to see Barbie release a doll with Type 1 diabetes — and even more powerful that it made headlines across major media outlets. Representation matters! But… the public reaction was honestly was disappointing. So many comments were filled with ignorance and misinformation. This is exactly why we need to keep advocating and educating. Type 1 diabetes is NOT caused by sugar, diet, or lifestyle.⁠ It’s an autoimmune disease — meaning the body attacks its own insulin-producing cells. It can happen to anyone, at any age.⁠ Type 1 diabetics also manage it by taking insulin, not Ozempic or pills.⁠ ⁠ Type 2 diabetes is a completely different condition. It often is caused by insulin resistance or reduced insulin production, and is managed differently.⁠ I hope this really incentivize you to keep advocating and educating people about type 1 diabetes and the difference between type 1 and type 2.
