Late yesterday, US President Donald Trump left the G7 summit in Canada a full day early, with his aides citing the situation unfolding in the Middle East. He returned to Washington DC last night, where he called for an urgent meeting of the National Security Council at the White House. According to reports,Trump’s advisers have urged him not to approve American strikes on Iran, fearing it would become an open-ended campaign. As of this morning, the White House is standing by and Trump is monitoring the situation from the Situation Room. Earlier in the day yesterday, Trump refused to join G7 leaders in calling for de-escalation between Israel and Iran, and posted a warning: “Everyone should immediately evacuate Iran.” However, Trump still believes there could be a deal he could broker between Iran and Israel, not just a ceasefire, but something “much bigger than that,” he stated. In the meantime, the Pentagon is expanding its military presence in the Middle East and Europe in response to worsening hostilities. The White House is discussing with Iran the possibility of a meeting this week between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Before leaving, Trump joined the other leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK along with the EU to issue a joint statement: “Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror. We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. They pledged to “remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability.” The G7 summit, which marks its 50th anniversary this year, is set to run through today. Today, without Trump, the G7 chair, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, joined by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will try to show their clout to shape world events despite the early departure of Trump. #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy
