Maybe this is why Tally Hall spells it "s*n"

E at the end makes the vowel say its name. So sone is pronounced with O saying its name oooo and son without the E the O says Uuu. So sun as for son. Sun and son are the same

why was son spelled with a u in earlier english if its germanic cognates tend to be spelled (and afaik pronounced) with an o (german: sohn, icelandic: sonur, swedish: son, norwegian sønnur (not quite an o), dutch: zoon)

I love this, though I'd argue that the words you listed with the 'O' letter replacement, I'd pronounce with more an 'O' sound rather than a 'U' sound. Son and Sun are very different sounding words to me.

what exactly do you mean by "pronounced with a u". the o/u sound in both son and sun is actually closer to "a" (like in human), no?

Bartosz Tarrant :
that's not how u sound. the original sound of u is like oo in book or cool or u in put. in almost every language its pronounced that way.

why does the Danish "å" have a donut instead of a dot above it? is it just a weird quirk of some fonts?
