@stephthearchaeologist: Pompeii had people in houses and in the street while Herculaneum was almost empty in comparison. People were inside the boathouses and on the beach. Desperately trying to get help which would never come #bonetok #archaeology #archaeologist #History #historytok #learnontiktok #academictiktok

Fun fact: this is exactly what would happen to the surrounding states of the Yellowstone Volcano in MT/WY. We would die instantly or almost, from either the eruption or suffocation from the ash/soot.

Pompeii died so fast they were almost frozen as they lived. Herculaneum was a mad dash for the boats, but there are never enough boats.

Those bones were people once. I can’t imagine how scared they were.

The sadder part is that these people died unimaginably horrible deaths. I remember reading that they essentially boiled to death in those rooms.

There’s one that I think of all the time, of two women covering a girl. It’s believed the two women were her nannies/maids as the girl was found with silver hoops marking her as someone who was wealthy. I imagine those two women poured their hearts and souls into caring for her and they died trying to protect her.

It’s wild to me that volconlogists in the early 2000’s had to burn pig bones at a high heat to prove the theory that these people passed from a pyroclastic flow. The pig bones showed the same type of charring that the victims of Herculaneum had on their bones 🥺. I wonder how many other civilizations or cities are buried underneath other towns with volcanic activity

They know they didn’t escape because we have firsthand accounts of everyone stranded on the shore they just don’t know where they all are

What would have been the cause of death for them? If the boat house was facing away from the volcano then hypothetically shouldn’t they have been able to safely hide there?

they've come across a woman and a small child (boy I think), and after some testing it was found they weren't even related. the woman was using her body to shield the child. that child was probably lost, scared, and confused, and this woman tried her hardest to protect him. 😭

out of the 20,000 residents 1000 died which is still sad but grateful that atleast 19,000 still manage to live

I stood there in March and I was surprised that they're on display so openly. I expected the doors to be closed. In one of the boat houses was the skeleton of a small animal, too. maybe a dog, I don't remember. someone even tried to save a pet ...

You’re my favorite archeologist to follow because you humanize the remains you study. Thank you for always giving me something to cry about, I wish every archeologist had the same love for humanity that you do.
