The book also portends that socialism (e.g. the USDA camp) is the shiny solution 🤔

I don’t think it has much to say about the American dream. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of people. It’s not true believers being destroyed by excessive dreams. The best elements of human character are revealed piecemeal.

When I read this in high school (in the 90s) it was easier to believe that this was just the way things were in the past and we were more progressive now. If I read it now I'm sure I'd feel differently. As we get poorer and poorer and the government doesn't even pretend to care about us anymore, this book feels more like a horrible window into the future than a view of the past.

Read Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley" to recover from The Grapes of Wrath.

I didn't even start it. I did myself a disservice by opting to take general english instead of advanced or AP english

This book made me a Socialist and a Union supporter in high school. And I was able to talk about it in history class without fear. This was in the late 70's. I suppose conservatives now would like to burn it.

When I read the Grapes of Wrath all I could think about is how the more things change the more they stay the same. . . So many people in this country face the same struggle still. It felt so bleak.

I admit I haven’t read the book but the movie is one of my most of my favorites. The messages are just as relevant today as they were then. So yeah, nothing has really changed, which is horrible to admit. We have all this tech now, but greed and selfishness seems to be eternal.

I read Steinbeck when I was thirteen, in 1976. Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, To a God Unknown, and more. It set me on a different path than my conservative upbringing expected. Steinbeck radicalized me and I’m grateful.

Excellent, excellent book. Critics hate that he alternates the fiction story with historical essays, but i think it is fantastic. Ending is devastating.
