I’ve done it in the past and it has been okay, but the cell phones are just too much now. They will get an alert, and they will be compelled to respond, and then they are in the phone and I’m inviting power stuggles.

I allow students to listen to music as long as it doesn't distract or disrupt around them. I do play music on the speaker, but its usually something calm and study focused

When my youngest brother was in year 6 (final year of primary school) his tecaher played calm classical/instrumental music often during class to establish a controlled and calm baseline. I always loved catching the last few minutes of his class when I came to pick him up 😁.

I taught middle school with the same rules and I would allow it for certain classes. It really depended on the maturity of the students.

My rule is they have to be able to hear me if I call out to the class, and their table partners can’t hear it.

I will play music or put on one of those YouTube scenes. I don't like headphones, because then they aren't part of the class. I also teach math, which doesn't lend itself to the same independent work as ELA.

I had the same policy but with the addition of 1 ear bud only, that way it could get their attention in case of an emergency

You remind me of my reading teacher so much she was the most awesome reading teacher I ever had in school I ask you like hey is there a chance I could read my favorite books and sleep go for long as you write down the logs you’re good but unfortunately I didn’t get to have her senior year because she had to move away She got some job offers somewhere back east

I had a student who makes his own music and he would purposely drop new tracks during our class time so we could listen as a class. I have a folder on my computer with all the songs students would make, so when they become famous, I can say I knew them when!

I work in a district where the elementary and special needs kids get like lofi music playing from the smartboard and now some of the high school teachers are doing the same thing too. it seems to help the kids working.

I honest to god can not focus without music. Some of my high school teachers even played music in class for the students ☺️

yes yes yes let us listen to music during independent work time. I have been able to write 8 pages😁 for an essay with it but I get writers block without it😅. and ya it about external noise now my high school should allow this but they dont

Im an art teacher pk-8 and i will say there are some kids who work so much better when they have music so my rule is they have to have headphones and they have to be working (mainly middle school) But I also let kids suggest music for the classroom playlist idk it’s hard for me to make art without music and I feel like it helps get in the zone

yeah in my corporate job when I need to focus in, here comes the jams. I coach my team the same, it's just a tactic for focus and a good one for the real world hs teachers always want to talk about

My policy is headphones or mute, because nothing drives me insane faster than the horrible tinny audio of someone else's device from across the room, but I acknowledge that having them play it out loud would mean that I would know that it isn't so loud that they can't hear me.

My favorite teacher who was the Ms/Hs art teacher in my small school says as long as it’s not a distraction like you can’t skip and not changing it all the time she let us . She is my favorite teacher ever!!
