14 miles one way, 28 RT. 13,528 ft. Early season conditions. Melting snow fields. Temps in the 20s. Wind gusts over 50 mph. And a gnarly storm set to roll in at the end of the week. This is what we were up against as we set out to climb King's Peak. As we headed up Anderson's, things started to derail. We were moving MUCH slower than anticipated. Everyone was breathing heavy as the effects of being over 12,000ft hit us. We regrouped and had a conversation. If we turned back, we would miss our only weather window to summit. We gauged the kids energy as well as our own. Together we decided we had it in us. We pushed on and reached the summit much later than expected. Hiking back to camp in the dark wasn't a possibility anymore, but a reality. The sunset illuminated the sky as we inched back down to the saddle. With every foot descended, a little life came back into us. Nausea and headaches abated. Then, darkness settled in around us and we were engulfed whole by a moonless sky. Bedtimes came and went. One person navigated to keep us on the trail, the others focused on kids and staying together. It was slow. It was tedious. It made us second guess every decision we had made that brought us here. We reached a snow field with a gentle slope that ended in a flat, grassy spot. It's funny how such a small act can breathe life back into an entire group. Laughter rang into the night as we slid down the snow. The kids giggled at such an unexpected ride. It lifted our spirits enough to continue the trek, and Minecraft conversation took us the rest of the way back to our tents. We collapsed in a heap at 11:00 pm at camp. What. A. Day. An adventure we won't ever forget #kingspeakutah #kingspeak #highuintas #backpackingwithkids #utahpeakbaggers #kidswhohike
